St. Aloysius’ Convent – Taung Goke

St. Aloysius’ Convent, situated at Than Dwe Junctions in Taung Goke in the Diocese of Pyay, was established on 29 January 1983, following an invitation from Most Rev. Dr. U Thawng Shwe. Upon arrival, the Sisters initially faced challenges due to the presence of only a few Christians and the religious bias by the Rakhine Buddhist community. The Rakhine Buddhists objected to Christian services and worship, leading the Sisters to build their friendly relationship, by offering free tuitions, caring for orphaned Children, and providing education to bridge their understanding with non-Christians. Tensions during a strike between the Rakhine and Muslims also made it challenging for the Tamil Sisters to venture to go outside. During the Summer, the Sisters engaged themselves in tours with the Parish Priest and Catechist.

The primary aim of St. Aloysius’ Convent is to engage in mission work and to provide a convenient stopping point for passing Sisters and Priests. The leadership includes Sr. Agnes Hla Khin the Superior, and Sr. Fatima Koe Htin. The Sisters are engaged in various ministries including caring for Students in the Boarding and the Orphans, conducting village tours with the Priest, visiting families and the sick, and holding prayer services on Sundays and Feast Days.
