THE HISTORY OF ST. CHARLES BORROMEO’S CONVENT, CHAUNG
St. Charles Borromeo’s Convent situated in Chaung Tha Village, Taing Kyo, Gwa Township, Rakhine State, within the territory of the Diocese of Pyay, was established on account of an invitation from Most Rev. Dr. Gregory Taik Maung and Than Dwe the Parish Priest, and Fr. Michael Kyi Lwin. The invitation to establish this Convent aimed to engage in apostolate work in Chaung Tha Village at Gwa Township. Accepting the invitation, Sr. Mary Flora, the Provincial Superior, along with Sr. Mary Clare (in-charge), Sr. Victoria, and Sr. Agnes Hla Khin, opened the St. Charles Borromeo Convent on 26 April 2008. They initially cared for a Widow and her son, and despite the transfer of Sr. Philomena on 1 July 2008, the Sisters continued their apostolic work.
The Sisters focused on six villages within the Parish, accompanying the Parish Priest on tours to provide spiritual guidance, lead feasts, and Novenas. Their efforts included uplifting the education of impoverished Children through free tuition, offering health care treatments, and addressing social issues. Supported by the Diocese and villagers, they cultivated a garden and engaged in poultry farming.
The primary aim of St. Charles Borromeo’s Convent is to do apostolic work and enhance the education of underprivileged children. The leadership includes Sr. Cecilia Nya Par the Superior, and Sr. Caroline.
