St. Augustine High School – Thangalkarai

THE HISTORY OF ST. AUGUSTINE HIGH SCHOOL THANGALKARAI

St. Augustine High School Thangalkarai in Gingee, Tamilnadu, was established on 2nd June 1984 as “Care Council Primary School” with 166 students and 5 teachers. The school’s primary objective was to uplift Dalit children from financially poor backgrounds through education. It was later upgraded to a high school and renamed as St. Augustine High School. On 4th March 2000, the administration was handed over to the congregation of Franciscan Sisters of St. Aloysius Gonzaga (FSAG). The school aims to provide holistic education to underprivileged students, empowering them for a better future.

The school is recognized by the government but operates autonomously without any aid from the government. Despite the challenges, the dedicated staff of nine members ensures a high-quality education for the students. The school has achieved a 100% success rate in annual exams.

The purpose of establishing the school was to provide education to Dalits, Tribals, and poor children. The initial members of the institution included Rev. Sr. Jona Maria Sevil (Headmistress), Rev. Sr. Chinnammal, and Rev. Sr. Sheela.

Overall, St. Augustine High School plays a vital role in providing education and hope to underprivileged students, aiming to empower them to break the barriers of their social background and lead a better life through education.
