Michael Ansaldo Convent – Avadi

THE HISTORY OF MICHAEL ANSALDO CONVENT, AVADI

Michael Ansaldo Convent  in Avadi, Chennai was built in the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore with the mission of extending their service. The land for the Convent and Child Care Center was bought in 2000, and later the land for a Ladies’ Hostel was acquired in 2006. The construction of the Convent and Crèche was completed in 2004, while the Ladies’ Hostel was completed in 2006. The Avadi Community functions under the jurisdiction of Michael Ansaldo Province Vijayawada from 2007 onwards.

The purpose of constructing the Convent is Social Work, and at present the Ministries include Social Work, Education and Evangelization Ministries. The Convent was blessed by Rt. Rev. Lawrance Pius, DD, Ph.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Madras Mylapore in 2004, and the Michael Ansaldo Women’s Hostel was blessed by Most Rev. A.M. Chinnappa, S.D.B, DD, Ph.D., Archbishop of Madras Mylapore in 2006. The first members of the community were Sr. Velankannai, Sr. Sandhana Mary, Sr. Gracy, and Sr. Pascal Mary. The Superior General at the time of establishment was Rev. Mother Noel Rani, and the parish priest during the inauguration was Rev. Fr. P.K. Mathew of Kamaraj Nagar.
