St. Josephs Convent – Suramangalam

THE HISTORY OF  ST. JOSEPH’S CONVENT, SURAMANGALAM

The St. Joseph’s Convent in Suramangalam, Salem, was established on 9th January 1942 under the leadership of Rev. Mother Superior General, Berkmans Mary. The purpose of its establishment was to support the poor and needy through educational and evangelical work. The community is currently involved in various ministries, including education with three separate schools and evangelization in nearby areas.

Important events in the community include celebrating feasts, birthdays, and participating in spiritual and physical activities. They actively participate in church festivals, meetings, retreats, and funerals. The first community members were Rev. Mother Kathreera Mary, Rev. Sr. Emmanuel, and Rev. Sr. Kanikkai Mary.

The convent underwent several renovation and expansion projects over the years, including the construction of the present convent in 1970 and additions like the first floor in 1976. Land was acquired in Andipatty, Pagalpatty, and Steel Plant in different years. Renovation work included the chapel, kitchen, water tank, and sisters’ rooms, among others.

The community also engages in social work, providing financial assistance to the poor and supporting people during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, due to the pandemic, they temporarily suspended house visits and Anbiyam participation.
