St. Louis Convent – Mugaiyur

THE HISTORY OF  ST. LOUIS CONVENT – MUGAIYUR

St. Louis Convent in Mugaiyur was established on 19th March 1908 with three sisters under the leadership of Rev. Sr. Kanikkai Mary. The primary purpose was to engage in educational ministry. Initially, the sisters were involved in parish church duties and religious ministry. Over the years, they undertook various activities, including making sacramental bread, purchasing agricultural land, and celebrating the Golden Jubilee in 1958.

In 1984, a small infirmary was set up, providing health services to the students and the local population. The management responsibility of St. Joseph’s Girls School in Mugaiyur was officially handed over to the congregation in 1996, marking a historical achievement.

During the years, the sisters extended their ministry to nearby villages using a cycle rickshaw and engaged in spiritual and field work. They celebrated the centenary of the house in 2009 and constructed a compound wall using funds from St. Joseph’s Matric School.

Currently, the convent consists of four sisters involved in day-to-day activities of the parish church, such as altar decoration, flower arrangement for masses, serving Holy Communion, and catechism classes. They also manage the Magimai Matha Stall, selling holy materials and candles.

The sisters live harmoniously, celebrating feasts and special events, which motivates them to carry out the Lord’s ministry in various ways. St. Louis Convent continues its educational ministry and serves the community through religious activities and church duties.
