THE HISTORY OF ST. JOSEPH’S GIRLS HR. SEC. SCHOOL, SURAMANGALAM, SALEM

St. Joseph’s Girls Hr. Sec. School was established by the Franciscan Sisters of St. Aloysius Gonzaga in Suramangalam, Salem, with the aim of providing education and social reform to the underprivileged. The school started as St. Joseph Primary School and gradually expanded to include a Higher Elementary School. In 1962, with the support of the Salem Diocese and the initiative of Rev. Fr. S.C. Sebastian, it was upgraded to St. Joseph Girls High School.

Over the years, the school saw continuous growth and development, including the addition of new classrooms and an auditorium. In 1978, it was further upgraded to St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School. The school has excelled in academics, producing students who achieved top marks in various subjects.

Currently, the school has over 3100 students and 85 staff members. It is known for its commitment to providing quality education, spiritual consciousness, and moral values. Catechism classes are offered to Roman Catholic students, while moral instruction and human rights education are provided to non-Catholic students. The school actively participates in various competitions and examinations, and students benefit from scholarships and welfare schemes provided by the government.

St. Joseph’s Girls Hr. Sec. School encourages sports and physical activities, and its students have excelled in various sports at the district and state levels. The school’s growth and success can be attributed to the tireless efforts of the correspondents and headmistresses who have served over the years.
