Eluchimaiyam – Pullichapallam

THE HISTORY OF ELUCHIMAIYAM, PULICHAPALLAM

Eluchimaiyam, also known as Shalom Illam, was established in 2004 by Sisters Sr. Punitha and Sr. Ponipass Mary in Veedore. It began as a project called Eluchi, aiming to uplift the low-caste people in 25 villages. In 1997, Sr. Arockia Mary and Sr. Motcha Pushparani conducted various activities like medical camps, women’s day celebrations, and street play training for the youth and women. As their work expanded, they encountered issues faced by women, children, and youth, leading to the emergence of STEPS (Social Transformation Education and People’s Service) in 2004.

STEPS was established to address the economic, social, and cultural exploitation faced by the marginalized communities in Pulichapallam. The organization works on empowering women, youth, and children and promoting human rights and equal opportunities for all individuals.

Eluchimaiyam, as part of STEPS, has been active for 12 years, adopting a Rights-Based Approach to empower marginalized communities and contribute to nation-building. They engage in evangelization through catechism and church ministry, as well as social work, including evening classes, computer and tailoring programs, awareness campaigns, and counseling services.

Important events in the community include health awareness programs, medical camps, leadership training, and celebrations of special occasions like Women’s Day, Christmas, and Pongal.

The first community members were Sr. Jayanthi, Sr. Kalaiarasi, Sr. Auxilia, and Sr. Rathina.

In 2016, the community underwent renovation. The Superior General at that time was Very Rev. Sr. A. Mary Stella, and the Provincial was Very Rev. Mother G. Rajamani.
