St. Louis Convent – Othiyathur

THE HISTORY OF  ST. LOUIS CONVENT – OTHIYATHUR

St. Louis Convent in Othiyathur was established on 10th January 1979 by Rev. Mother Barbara Mary. The initial community members were Sr. Ponmani Philominal (Superior), Sr. Pappu Mangalam, and Sr. Anthoniyammal. They started their ministry of evangelization and education in the village, living in a palm leaves shed (Hut).

Over the years, the convent underwent several developments and renovations. Land was purchased for cultivation, and a new convent building was constructed with the help of benefactors. The community engaged in various activities, such as starting a nursery school, crèche, and hostel, and planting eucalyptus trees in the backyard. In 2011, the convent’s name was changed to “St. Louis Convent.”

The present ministry of the community focuses on evangelization. They celebrate various important events, including Christmas, St. Joseph’s Feast, St. Aloysius Feast, and more. Regular activities include house visiting, recollections, confession, communion, and confirmation classes.

The most recent renovation took place on 27th November 2019, which was blessed with a Holy Mass. The province provided funds for the repair and maintenance of the aqua machine and water tank in August 2021.

Throughout its history, St. Louis Convent has been dedicated to education, spiritual enlightenment, and evangelization, serving the community with love and devotion.
