St. Louis Convent – Moolakulam

THE HISTORY OF ST. LOUIS CONVENT – MOOLAKULAM

The report narrates the history of the St. Louis Convent in Moolakulam, managed by the Franciscan Sisters of St. Aloysius Gonzaga. The invitation to establish the convent came from Rt. Rev. Dr. Selva Nathar, the Archbishop of Puducherry – Cuddalore. The congregation was given 7 acres of land and tasked with evangelization and social work.

In 1977, under the leadership of Rev. Superior General Barbara Mary, the convent was officially established with the presence of five sisters. A tailoring institute was started during the period of Mother Nambikai Mary, which operated from 1982 to 1994.

Over the years, different Superior Generals served the community, with periods ranging from 3 to 12 years each. In 2001, the land was divided into two parts by the Puducherry diocese, with a portion allocated for a school and the remaining land retained by the sisters.

In 2013, due to the closure of a French textiles company, the tailoring institute faced challenges in obtaining raw materials, leading to its closure. The convent was handed over to Shalom Province, and charitable activities were resumed in 2018 under the leadership of Mother G. Rajamani.

Currently, Sister Superior G. Maria Pushpam provides counseling services, and Sisters Alexandria and Visuvasa Mary are engaged in evangelization activities at Moolakulam.

The report concludes by expressing hope and prayers for the continuation of charitable work activities at the convent, which has served the community for a total of 48 years.
