St. Francis Assisi Convent – Kurusukuppam

THE HISTORY OF ST. FRANCIS ASSISI CONVENT, KURUSUKUPPAM

The community was started on 30th August 1964 when Francine Anandarayen Desjardins provided land to Louis de Gonzaga, a relative of Sr. Scholastic Mary FSAG. The convent building was inaugurated and blessed on 12th January 1969 by Most Rev. Ambrose, Bishop of Archdiocese of Pondy Cuddalore. The initial ministry included education and evangelization, focusing on providing free education to the poor and downtrodden children of the fishermen community and helping widows, abundant women, and orphans.

Present Ministry: The community is actively engaged in education and evangelization ministry.

Important Events in the Community: The community celebrates various events such as Feast Days, Birthdays, Christmas, New Year, and Easter, spreading joy and blessings. Retreats are conducted for local sisters every three months, and weekly visits are made to family members. The community also provided COVID-19 relief materials, including rice bags, groceries, spices, and condiments, to support those affected during the pandemic.

The First Community Members: The community began with 7 members.

Year of Renovation: Renovation works were done at various times, including the renovation of bathroom and toilet rooms in 2007, guest room, refectory chapel, and other works in 2012-2013, renovation of Sisters’ rooms and electrical work in 2017, and prayer hall renovation in 2021.
