THE HISTORY OF ST. LOUIS CONVENT, GENGAPATTU

St. Louis Convent, Gengapattu, was established in 1972 with the approval of Most Rev. Bishop Anthony Muthu of Vellore Diocese and Most Rev. Archbishop Ambrose of Pondicherry Diocese. The initial community consisted of three sisters: Rev. Sr. Superior Swakin Mary, Rev. Sr. Stanislaus, and Rev. Sr. Gose Masthin. The convent’s ministries included medical, educational, and evangelization services. They started a dispensary to provide healthcare, engaged in catechism teaching, and actively participated in the parish’s pastoral activities.

The foundation of the convent was blessed by Most Rev. Mgr. Lazar, and its official opening took place on 25th May 1974 by Most Rev. Bishop Anthony Muthu. The sisters received land for agricultural purposes from the Vellore Diocese. They also established a tailoring institution for the welfare of women.

In 2019, the convent was renovated for the Rosary Conference under the guidance of Rev. Mother Lilly Grace and the Provincial team, blessed by Most Rev. Bishop Dr. Soundara Raju. The sisters’ dedication and successful educational ministry were notable, as they cared for poor children and ran a caring home.

Presently, the convent is under the leadership of Rev. Sr. Superior Pushpa Bai, with community members including Rev. Sr. Arockiamary and Rev. Sr. Susai Mary. Their ministries continue to flourish, focusing on medical, evangelization, educational, and women’s welfare activities. The community celebrates its feast regularly and participates in parish events and celebrations.
