St. Louis Convent – Carmel Puram, Kodaikanal

THE HISTORY OF ST. LOUIS CONVENT, CARMELPURAM, KODAIKANAL

St. Louis Convent, Carmel Puram, Kodaikanal, was established on 20.06.1962 in the Diocese of Madurai. The purpose of establishing the community was evangelization and education, as well as providing help to the needy in various ways. The Superior General at the time of establishment was not mentioned, but the Parish priest was an SJ Priest.

The present ministries of the community include house visiting in the evening hours, teaching hymns for the Eucharistic celebration, preparing the people of God for sacraments, being available to the needs of the people, and safeguarding the land and raising animals.

Important events in the community’s history include the establishment of Sewing and Typing centers in Bagiyapuram in 1976, which received support until 1977. They also started St. Ignatius Nursery school in 1976, which operated until 1996. In 1981, the typing institute was recognized by the government.

The first community member was Rev. Sr. Josephine Mary. Over the years, the community underwent several renovations and land acquisition. They purchased 1 acre and 8 cents of land in 1962-1963 and built a compound wall in 1973. In 1998, they renovated all the buildings. The sisters have further desires to renovate the terrace, kitchen, and damaged walls.
