THE HISTORY OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI’S CHURCH,  LASHIO

St. Francis of Assisi’s Church, located on Yadanar Road in Lashio, North Shan State, in Lashio in the Diocese of Lashio, has a history that traces back to 1998 when Rev. Bishop Charles Bo granted permission for the construction of the Convent in Lashio. On 23 January 1999, at 5: 00 PM, Most Rev. Dr. Philip Za Hawng blessed the new convent and bestowed upon it the name St. Francis of Assisi. Initially intended as a Guest House for the Sisters from Naung Cho, Kyauk Me, and Kunlung Convents, Bishop Philip advised a shift towards apostolic work and recommended that the Convent may take on the responsibility of caring for Lisu Boarders.

The primary aim of the convent is to elevate the education and well-being of tribal Children. The leadership consists of Sr. Rose Mary Htun the Superior, Sr. Shirley Marie and Sr. Agatha Bawk. The main ministries carried out by the Sisters involve caring for the Children in the Boarding and participating in prayer meetings.
