Aloysius’ Convent – Kyakume

THE HISTORY OF ALOYSIUS’ CONVENT

Aloysius’ Convent – Kyakume was opened on the 19th July, 1976 as invited by Monsignor Jocelyn of Lashio Diocese. Rev. Mother Gertrude, the Regional Superior sent Sr. Alphonsa as Sister in-charge, Sr. Rita Peter and Sr. Marie Lynda for this community. At the beginning they had to stay in a small hut and did the missionary work. Msgr. Jocelyn was kind enough towards to build a new convent building for the Children in the Boarding and a two storied building for the girls undergoing Tailoring Training, close to the convent. There were altogether 22 girls in the Boarding and 25 girls in the Tailoring Training.

In the mission in Kyauk Me we help at the Parish activities, Mother Association, Teaching Catechism to the Children, visiting the sick both Catholics and non-Catholics in Hospital and Houses and going to nearby villagers to visit the poor and the lonely and at the same time giving tuitions in the evenings to the girls in the Boarding.

Aim: To promote the Palaung, Kachin and Wa Children.
