HISTORY OF  SACRED HEART OF JESUS CONVENT, PUDUCHERRY

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Convent in Puducherry was established in 1918 by Sisters Sr. Alexandria, Sr. Kamalia, and Sr. Susaiammal. Initially, they conducted catechism classes for the poor. The school associated with the convent received French Recognition in 1922. Over the years, the responsibilities of the school and the convent were handled by different individuals, leading to the expansion of educational and social work.

The Superior General at the time of establishment was Rev. Mother Maria Susaiammal.

The purpose of establishing the convent was to provide catechism for the poor people.

Currently, the convent’s ministry involves education and social work.

Important events in the community include the registration of the orphanage, the initiation of mid-day meals for school children, and receiving financial aid for various projects.

The first community members were Sr. Alexandria, Sr. Kamalia, and Sr. Susaiammal.

The convent underwent renovation in 2006.
