THE HISTORY OF GONZAGA GERIATRIC HOME
Gonzaga Geriatric Home was inaugurated on November 10, 2015, by Superior General Rev. Sr. A. Mary Stella. The home was blessed by Rt. Rev. Bishop Dr. Anthony Anandharayar, Archbishop of Puducherry and Cuddalore. Initially, Sr. Arockia Selvi served as the first in charge, followed by Sister Agnes Auxiliya, both of whom are trained nurses. In 2019, Sr. Susanna was appointed as the superior of the community.
The home consists of 24 rooms, each with an attached bathroom, and a spacious hall where residents can gather and relax. The serene and green environment adds to the comfort of the elderly residents. The care of the inmates is provided by four nurses, two of whom are sisters, and two are laity residing in the same house. Additionally, there are four domestic servants responsible for maintaining cleanliness and other necessary arrangements.
The services provided to the elderly and sick residents are chargeable. The accommodation and treatment are paid for, and the facility also offers 24/7 ambulance services for an additional fee, which can be utilized by others as well.
Currently, there are 16 inmates residing in the home. Although the residents pay for the services provided, the love and dedication shown to the elderly and sick are considered integral parts of the package. It has become a global issue that many elderly individuals have no one to take care of them at home. This poses a challenge for employed couples who are old or facing health issues. They require a place that can provide proper care, healthy food, a good environment, nearby clinics, a loving and nurturing atmosphere, and the sounds of companionship.
Unfortunately, not all sons and daughters can afford to provide such facilities and care for their parents. Some honestly express a lack of time to take care of their aging parents. Our parents do everything they can to provide us with a better life, but as they grow old and become dependent, they can become burdensome. It is in response to this need that Gonzaga Geriatric Home was established, aiming to provide elderly and sick individuals with a peaceful and joyful environment during their final days.
