St. Joseph College of Arts and Science for Women

THE HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION

St. Joseph College of Arts and Science for Women, located in Pagalpatty, Omalur TK, Salem, was inaugurated on 11th August 2021 by Most Rev. Arul Selvam Rayappan, Bishop of Salem, and blessed by Rev. Mother G Rajamani FSAG, Superior General. The college received approval from the Govt. of Tamil Nadu on 8th September 2021 and is affiliated with Periyar University, Salem, since 11th October 2021.

It is a Catholic Minority Institute, managed by the Franciscan Sisters of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Pondicherry, a catholic women-religious congregation dedicated to integral human development. The congregation has been providing committed services in education, health-care, and social welfare, both nationally and internationally since 1775.

The mission of the college is to provide quality education to rural and marginalized women, empowering them to transform themselves and society, with a strong foundation in equality, justice, and peace. Currently, the College offers various courses such as B.A. English, B.Com (C.A), B.SC Computer Science, B.SC Physics, and B.SC Mathematics, along with employable professional skill development courses. The college boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories, a comprehensive library, and advanced IT facilities, creating an attractive educational environment.

The first-year UG courses commenced in the academic year 2020 – 21, with girls enrolling for various programs. The college is guided and led by Rev. Mother G Rajamani FSAG, Superior General, Rev. Sr. H. Nirmala FSAG, Superior of the Convent, Sr. Dr. A Antony Maria Jansi FSAG, Secretary of the College, Dr. S Lourdu Nathan, Principal of the College, and Rev. Sr. Josephine Therese Revathi FSAG, Administrator. Together, they are working towards realizing the institution’s motto of “Educate for Excellence and Transformation.”
