THE HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION

NAME OF THE INSTITUTION: St. Joseph Teacher Training Institute (Women), Pagalpatty, Salem.

NAME OF THE SUPERIOR GENERAL AT THE TIME OF ESTABLISHMENT: Rev. Mother Nambikai Mary, Superior General.

YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT: July 18, 1979 (18.07.1979)

PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHMENT: The institution was founded to prioritize the education of young women, as empowering them would uplift the entire family. The goal is to promote good education and values, especially among rural and disadvantaged women.

St. Joseph Teacher Training Institute (TTI) was established in 1947 as St. Mary’s Teacher Training Institute by the S.M.I. sisters in Salem Arisipalayam. After 32 years of service, the responsibility was handed over to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Aloysius Gonzaga on July 18, 1979. The name changed to St. Joseph TTI on February 17, 1983. The institute was later relocated from St. Joseph’s campus, Suramangalam, to Pagalpatty on March 14, 1996. The institution aims to provide quality education and values to rural and underprivileged women.

IMPORTANT EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS:

  • Blessing of New Land by Most Rev. Michael Bosco Duraisamy, Bishop of Salem, for constructing a new building for St. Joseph TTI on September 9, 1993.
  • Purchase and registration of 9 acres 14 cents of land for the institution in 1997-98.
  • Construction of a new building for TTI on October 10, 1994, inaugurated by Rev. Mother Nambikai Mary, Superior General, and blessed by Most Rev. Bishop Michael Bosco Duraisamy, Bishop of Salem.
  • Establishment of a new model school on September 10, 1996, on St. Joseph’s campus.
  • Permanent Recognition approved by NCTE on August 28, 1998.
  • Approval for an additional intake of 100 students by NCTE on March 16, 2005.
  • Creation of a separate website for the institution on July 10, 2017.
  • Retirement functions for Rev. Sr. Margaret Daisy, the Principal in 2011, and Rev. Sr. Francis Mary on March 17, 2015.
  • Various activities and camps organized for trainees, including yoga classes, arts and craft activities, scouts and guides camp, and medical camps.
