St. Louis Convent – Thalaiyuthu

THE HISTORY OF  ST. LOUIS CONVENT, THALAIYUTHU

St. Louis Convent was established on 22nd July 1968, under the leadership of Rev. Mother Dennis Mary, during the time of Most Rev. Dr. Diraviam DD as the Bishop. The purpose of the establishment was to provide education to children, especially those working near the cement factory, through a primary school with classes from 9 am to 5 pm.

The present ministries of the community include evangelization, house visiting, guiding the Anbiyam (Christian prayer groups), teaching Catechism, preparing people for sacraments, and organizing celebrations in substations. The sisters are also involved in education, with one of them serving as the headmistress in the Diocesan school. They assist poor children with scholarships for education and engage in prison ministry, where Rev. Sr. S. Parichutham consoles the inmates.

An important event in the community’s history is the establishment of the Gonzaga Orphanage, which continues to care for children. The first community members were Rev. Sr. Marianna, Rev. Sr. Arulanantha Mary, Rev. Sr. Kosh Mazhthine, and Rev. Sr. Chiluvai Mary.

The convent underwent renovation twice, first in the year 2006 and then on 18th November 2018.
