St. Louis Convent – Thangalkarai

THE HISTORY OF  ST. LOUIS CONVENT, THANGALKARAI

St. Louis Convent, Thangalkarai, was initially started by the Nell Foundation as a care house primary school for poor and needy children on 1.6.1984. Later, on 6.3.2000, the Nell Foundation decided to hand over the school’s management authority to the Congregation of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, and Rev. Sr. L.C. Maria became the mother general at that time.

The purpose of the establishment was to provide education to underprivileged children in the society. The school’s growth was challenging, and initially, the sisters had to operate from a small room. However, through hard work and dedication, they managed to build a new school building.

The present ministries of the community include education, house visiting, catechism for Catholic children, collaboration with parish activities, and evangelization.

Some important events celebrated in the community include feast days of the sisters and congregation, the founder’s day, and the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

The first community members were Rev. Sr. Gonshabation (Superior), Rev. Sr. Joanna Maria Selvi (Head Mistress), Rev. Sr. Chinnammal (Teacher), and Rev. Sr. Sheela (Teacher).

The year of renovation for the convent building was 2021, and the community had a grand opening ceremony for their new house, attended by the Mother General, the Provincial Superior, the parish priest, and other sisters from neighboring communities.
