Infant Jesus Convent was established on 03.01.1903 to fulfill the vision of the congregation founder, Rev. Fr. Michael Ansaldo. The convent was inaugurated in the presence of Rev. Fr. Escand, with the primary aim of nurturing and caring for orphan children. The first community members, led by Rev. Mother Kanikkai Mary, were appointed to look after the orphans.

During the famine in 1914, the convent opened its doors to parents who couldn’t care for their children, accepting them warmly into their care. The number of children increased over time, prompting the decision to educate and instill values in them. In 1918, a primary school was inaugurated to provide basic education to the children. In 1956, a Handloom unit was started to enhance the children’s skills and provide regular training.

In 1979, the Cottage was established through Social welfare to take care of girl children, which continues to operate to this day, providing them with shelter and education. In 1985, the Working Women’s Hostel was built, receiving recognition from the Government in Delhi, to cater to ladies from other states. The hostel, established in 1986, currently accommodates over 60 women.

The present members of Infant Jesus Convent, Pondicherry, are actively engaged in their various roles, contributing to the welfare and education of the children and women under their care. The community remains steadfast in its mission to provide support and care to those in need.
