THE HISTORY OF ST. JOHN’S COVENT, VILLUPURAM
The report provides details about St. John’s Covent, which was established in Kalluri Nagar, Villupuram, in 1984 by the Sisters of St. Aloysius Gonzaga from Puducherry. The main purposes of starting this community were to safeguard orphans, provide education to the poor, and engage in social work to empower women and children. The building was constructed with the financial support of Rev. Fr. John Lafernez, and it was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Solomon in the presence of Mother General and provincial.
The community’s present ministry involves evangelization through church-related activities such as catechism, altar decoration, and choir management. They are also actively engaged in education, working in a Diocesan school, and running a music center with morning and evening classes.
Important events in the community include various renovation works, such as constructing rooms with attached toilets, repairing the compound wall, and renovating the bore well. They also added a new statue of St. Lourd’s (Mother Mary) to the convent.
The first community members included sisters responsible for RC Primary School, social work, and the school itself. In 2019, the convent underwent renovation. At the time of establishment, the Superior General was Very Rev. Mother Nambikkai Mary, and during the renovation period, the Superior General was Very Rev. Mother G. Rajamani, and the Provincial was Very Rev. Sr. Lilly Grace.
